How can the CDROM of a KVM virtual guest be set to be the second IDE drive?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

We use virt-manager to configure our KVM virtual machines. Each VM is using 3 HDD's and a CDROM drive as ATA device.
Even when adding HDD's first with virt-manager, it is important to have them as hda, hdb, hdc and as the last device the CDROM as hdd. Unfortunately the CDROM always get hdc and last HDD is shifted to hdd.

Current result:

IDE Disk 1
IDE Disk 2
IDE CDROM 1
IDE Disk 3

Intended configuration:

IDE Disk 1
IDE Disk 2
IDE Disk 3
IDE CDROM 1

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
