System with NFS mounts entered a hang state with a large number of 'D' state processes

Issue

  • The system entered a hang-state on some commands like ps, ls, pwd, etc. and the below messages are visible in the /var/log/messages file followed by a lot of 'D' state processes:
 kernel: [4403978.396146]  [<ffffffff81138443>] handle_mm_fault+0x263/0x2c0
 kernel: [4403978.396448]  [<ffffffff810414e9>] __do_page_fault+0x139/0x480
 kernel: [4403978.396868]  [<ffffffff814dda05>] page_fault+0x25/0x30

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.1
  • kernel version earlier than 2.6.32-220.13.1.el6 or kernel-2.6.32-279.el6
