[RHEL 4.8] smartctl seemingly gives incorrect error count results on disk drives

Issue

  • smartctl seems to give incorrect results

  • S.M.A.R.T. error counters seems to give incorrect values

  • Total errors are wrong
  • customer's documentation states that no errors are allowed on disks when upgrading (implying such systems are not upgradable)

  • In all cases the smartctl command reported "SMART Health Status: OK"

  • RHEL 4.8
  • smartctl utility version 5.33
