Files opened on read-only nfs mount consume kernel level file pointers and are never released.

Issue

  • The number of open file handles continues to increase.
  • kernel: VFS: file-max limit 4908788 reached
  • Kernel reaches file limits open, userspace tools do not agree with the count.
  • Using lsof and interating through /proc/pid/fd list show less than file-max open.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4
  • Observed between kernel version between 2.6.32-358.2.1 and 2.6.32-369
