How does the naming of KVM virtio-net NICs work in RHEL 8?

Issue

  • In RHEL 7, virtio-net network interfaces were always given some name like eth0, eth1, eth2, etc.
  • With RHEL 8, virtio-net NICs are given names such as ens3, ens9, etc. Why?
