The error `kexec: failed to load kdump kernel` appears when kdump is restarted

Issue

  • On a system with very high amounts of memory or less than 4GB of memory installed and the crashkernel kernel parameter set to auto, the following errors are received when starting kdump:
service kdump start
Starting kdump:                                            [FAILED]
 kdump: kexec: failed to load kdump kernel
 kdump: failed to start up

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
