RHEL7.5: Linux NFS4 client experiences connection issues during EMC Isilon failover - OPEN_CONFIRM operation with PUTFH Status: NFS4ERR_BADHANDLE

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • The setup is EMC Isilon storage environment with multiple physical nodes. When a RHEL client running 7.5 has a mount to a particular node and that node is rebooted, the NFS connection breaks briefly.

  • As a result whatever file(s) were being read / written at the time of the Isilon node reboot are interrupted due to loss of connection.

  • The file copy never completes, neither resumes after the failover. RHEL version 6, and RHEL 7.4, do not exhibit this behavior and the copy continues without interruption against the Isilon node that takes over the rebooted nodes IP address.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5 (NFS Client)
    • kernels 3.10.0-862*.el7 and above
  • EMC Isilon Storage (NFS server)
  • NFSv4
