[rhev] [v2v] importing a Windows guest from ESX gives error "no operating system could be detected"

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • How do I import a Windows guest from ESX into RHEV?
  • Error message when using virt-v2v tools command "virt-v2v -f virt-v2v.conf -o rhev -ic":
No operating system could be detected inside this disk image.

This may be because the file is not a disk image, or is not a virtual
machine image, or because the OS type is not understood by virt-inspector.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 2.2 on RHEL5, 3.0 on RHEL6

  • VMware ESX-based guest images running Windows

  • virt-v2v-0.6.1-1.el5.x86_64.rpm or earlier
