clvmd process takes the 100% of a CPU and lvm commands are unresponsive in RHEL 5

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • clvmd is using 100% CPU and lvm commands are not responsive
  • When issueing comands on lvm, like vgdisplay, lvdisplay, pvs, lvs... the command hangs and do not release the prompt and no output is displayed.
  • Every 30 minutes our monitoring agent start a "diskscan" operation which runs LVM commands: at the same time or immediately after, the clvmd process starts taking 100% CPU.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 with the Resilient Storage Add On
  • lvm2-cluster prior to release 2.02.88-9.el5_10.1
    • clvmd running
    • One or more volume groups marked with the "clustered" attribute
    • locking_type="3" in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf
  • This has been most observed in environments running diskscan from IBM Tivoli. It is likely possible to trigger this through other means, but this is the most common trigger observed.
