No GUI on RHEL 6 with an Intel Skylake chipset

Issue

  • On first boot after install an error screen is displayed which says the following, then the display goes black:

    ACPI: Unable to load the System Description Tables
Unknown Intel PCH (oxa2c6) detected
Warning: Intel Skylake processor with unknow PCH - this hardware has not undergone testing by Red Hat and might not be certified. Please consult https://hardware.redhat.com for certified hardware.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • Intel Skylake chipset
