RHEL5: Why do I see "error: Missing or invalid IP4 prefix '0'" ?

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • I see the following messages:
Aug 19 04:56:19 hostname nm-system-settings: ifcfg-rh: parsing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 ...
Aug 19 04:56:19 hostname nm-system-settings: ifcfg-rh: error: Missing or invalid IP4 prefix '0'
  • Why is nm_applet started, although NetworkManager is disabled on my system?
  • Why is ifcfg-rh not accepting whitespace characters around config values?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5
  • NetworkManager
