Why does ReaR backup hang on Red Hat Enterprise Linux waiting at "Copying files and directories" when OracleASM is installed?

When OracleASM is installed, the backup procedure hangs as follows
# rear -v mkrescue Relax-and-Recover X.XX / Git Using log file: /var/log/rear/rear-XXX.log Creating disk layout Creating root filesystem layout Copying files and directories# rear -v mkbackup Relax-and-Recover X.XX / Git Using log file: /var/log/rear/rear-XXX.log Creating disk layout Creating root filesystem layout Copying files and directories
