IPv6 multicast packets going through different interfaces than specified by routes

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • On a system with multiple interfaces, inserting a route for a specific multicast address doesn't work and the packets go out through another interface
  • The application doesn't use IPV6_MULTICAST_IF socket option to select the outgoing interface - see ipv6(7)
