Why does "\l" in /etc/issue print /dev/ttyS0 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, whereas on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 this prints ttyS0 ?

On the RHEL6 box,
[user@host6 ~]$ cat /etc/issue Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Beta 2 [64-bit] (Santiago Server) Kernel \r on an \m (\l)
And in the serial console the below is seen
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Beta 2 [64-bit] (Santiago Server)
Kernel 2.6.32-37.el6.x86_64 on an x86_64 (/dev/ttyS1)
