Cannot set user defined values in limits.conf with high UID. Message 'File size limit exceeded' unless unlimited value

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When a limit on fsize is set in /etc/security/limits.conf and the UID is high, the user can not login any more.
  • The message:
 su user1
File size limit exceeded (core dumped)

is seen because the write to the lastlog file fails.

Environment

RHEL 6 with lastlog configured (refer to https://access.redhat.com/solutions/977213)
RHEL 7
