Why do I experience NMI errors under certain conditions with Aquantia network cards?

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5+
  • AQC-107, or AQC-108 based AQtion network devices from Aquantia Corp.
  • Hardware IOMMU enabled
  • UEFI Network boot/PXE enabled

Issue

  • Why do I experience NMI errors under certain conditions with Aquantia network cards?

Resolution

A firmware bug makes it possible for Aquantia AQtion cards to experience an NMI when PXE is enabled. Corrected firmware is being tested now with an expected release date of August 13, 2018. Until the updated firmware is availble, we recommend that you use another card for PXE operations.

We will update this solution when the corrected firmware is available for download.

Diagnostic Steps

Messages similar to the following are found in the logs, and may coincide with an unexpected reboot during, or shortly after system boot:

[ 11.329947] Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 2d on CPU 0.
[ 11.336556] Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled?
