Audit rules on a lot of directories slows down the system running under RHEL6

When running a RHEL6 with audit rules on a bunch of directories, the system slows down significantly.
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.8
- audit package version 2.4.5-3.el6.x86_64
- System with >64 CPUs (+ >100 GB of RAM)
