Unable to mount Veritas vxfs filesystem with error "invalid super-block" on Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Issue

  • SAN volumes were mistakenly removed from the server while in use.  After returning them, unable to mount filesystem with error:
    mount: invalid super-block
    
  • Running fsck -t vxfs /path/to/device returns:
    UX:vxfs fsck.vxfs: ERROR: V-3-20012: not a valid vxfs file system
    UX:vxfs fsck.vxfs: ERROR: V-3-20694: cannot initialize aggregate
