Why are there different versions of the same package installed on a system?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When listing the packages installed on a system, it appears that multiple versions of the same package are installed:

    [root@system1 ~]# rpm -qa | grep PackageName-
    PackageName-7.0.2.0-Linux_GENERIC.noarch
    PackageName-7.0.7.0-Linux_GENERIC.noarch
    [root@system1 ~]#

The package has been installed using rpm -ivh --force PackageName-7.0.7.0-Linux_GENERIC.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5, 6 and 7
  • rpm
