How do I configure a DHCP server for network (PXE) boot of fully-virtualized Xen domains?

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

When a DHCP server is set up for network (PXE) boot as documented in the Installation Guide, network boot of fully-virtualized Xen domains will fail.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5

Description

The Installation Guide suggests to serve PXE boot information only if the client provides a special vendor class identifier in its DHCP request. The matched identifier is "PXEClient". Etherboot, the PXE client used by fully-virtualized Xen guests, instead provides "Etherboot-5.4" as its identification. This conflicts with the configuration suggested in the Installation Guide, and causes network boot of fully-virtualized Xen guests to fail.
