Better way to monitor SAN path health?

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

The behaviour of multipath -ll has changed between RHEL5 and RHEL6. For a LUN being served up by a storage array (active/active pathing), when one of the paths is dropped, multipath -ll does not show the path as 'failed'. It just doesn't show the path - only the surviving path.

In the RH knowledgebase, there is a document (56351) that describes how to get back the RHEL5 behaviour by manipulating fast_io_fail_tmo and dev_loss_tmo.

In lieu of adjusting those parameters, is there a monitor that shows that one of the SAN paths is down? We have a monitor, but it depends on the old RHEL5 multipatl -ll behaviour to work.
