Red Hat Satellite upgrade fails with a 'hostname doesn't have 3 fields (111.222.333). Can't be FQDN'

Issue

  • Red Hat Satellite 5.8 upgrade fails while running the pre-install checks similar to the output below, the hostname below is short and not a fully qualified domain name (FQDN).
# ./install.pl --upgrade --skip-selinux-test
* Starting Red Hat Satellite installer.
* Performing pre-install checks.
 hostname doesn't have 3 fields (111.222.333). Can't be FQDN. 
Use --skip-fqdn-test to bypass this error.
Exiting...

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (RHEL6)
  • Red Hat Satellite 5.8
