Why is my GFS filesystem showing less free space available than is accurate in RHEL?

Issue

  • df against a GFS file system shows less free space than du or gfs_tool df
  • Applications are reporting "No space left on device" errors for a GFS file system that is not full
  • df doesn't show the real value of free space for some GFS filesystems
  • df output doesn't show how much a gfs filesystem is occupying

Environment

  • Red Hat Cluster Suite 4+ and Red Hat GFS 6.1
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5 (with the High Availability and Resilient Storage Add Ons)
  • GFS file system(s)
