[VMWare][RHEL 6] Kernel panic on boot after upgrading kernel

After upgrading the kernel, the system boots fine once but panics on the next boot:
uncompression error Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block ... ...
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and 6
- VMWare virtual machine
