Is 40 Gigabit Ethernet (40GbE) supported by Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 or 6?
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
- 40 Gigabit Ethernet device(s)
Issue
- Is there support for 40 Gigabit Ethernet devices in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 or 6 ?
Resolution
- Support for
40 Gigabit Ethernetis not planned in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. This version of the operating system is now in Production Phase 2[^1] of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Lifecycle where only minor feature updates are planned. The changes necessary to implement the 40 Gigabit Ethernet standard are considered a major feature update and therefore cannot be delivered in a Production Phase 2 or Production Phase 3 release. [^1]: For more information on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Lifecycle, see the following link: https://access.redhat.com/support/policy/updates/errata/ - In Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, current plans to include support for 40G NIC is in RHEL 6.6 version and bugzillas like: 1024039, 1024042 are been tracked for the same.
