LTO-7 tape drive generates numerous Mode Parameters Changed dmesg logs in RHEL kernels

  • Whenever the SpectraLogic T950 LTO-7 tape drives are accessed the connected servers generate thousands of dmesg with text like below:
$ kernel: st 3:0:32:0: Mode parameters changed
$ kernel: st 3:0:33:0: Mode parameters changed
$ kernel: st 1:0:30:0: Mode parameters changed
$ kernel: st 3:0:21:0: Mode parameters changed


  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.8 with kernel 2.6.32-642
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.2 with kernel 3.10.0-327
  • Spectra Logic T950 LTO-7 Tape Drive
