Characters not translated properly when copied to clipboard in VNC session

Issue

I am seeing strange characters when copying text from the terminal program on a RHEL 6.8 desktop in a VNC session and pasting them into gedit on the same desktop session.
Why do special characters copy-and-pasted in a VNC session get changed to what appear to be control sequences?
