Unable to log into desktop on a virtual server created by cloning a disk
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
Issue
- Cloned server not accepting password for desktop login
- Unable to log into desktop but able to log into terminal
- Desktop refuses password
Resolution
- Delete the .xauthority file from the users home directory
- Run
mkxauth -u <user login> -cfor each user
Root Cause
- The .xauthority file from the original cloned machine must be deleted.
Diagnostic Steps
- Attempt to login to the Desktop as a user using valid credentials and fail
- Press
ctrl-alt-F2to switch to a terminal - Log into the terminal with the same credentials and succeed.
