How to automatically cancel "stuck" print jobs in RHEL

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

A print job was held in a "processing" state until CUPS was restarted with no information on why. This caused our print jobs to fill the /var/spool/cups volume and resulted in the loss of the entire print run. We need a way to ensure that jobs do not stay in a "processing" state indefinitely.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6 and 7
  • Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) 1.4.2 and 1.6.3
