Why is it not possible to extend a PV or a filesystem in a partition, even after successfully growing the disk and the subsequent partition?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When exporting a disk, LUN or image file to a Red Hat Enterprise Linux host by some means where it is possible to resize this unit after the event and have the host detect the resize without a reboot, and this device in the host has been used to install the system or it is otherwise housing a DOS partition table and a partition is being used either directly for a filesystem or it is being used as an LVM PV in an active VG. The problem faced is that even though the disk, LUN or image file may be extended and the host recognise this on the device it sees, and subsequently the partition on the device can be grown, a resize2fs or pvresize is not possible and effective until after a reboot.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4
