LVM stripe addition failing with "1 extents needed, but only 0 available" or "Insufficient suitable allocatable extents for logical volume"

Issue

When attempting to add additional stripes to a striped logical volume, the following messages show:

Insufficient free space: 1 extents needed, but only 0 available
Insufficient free space: 1 extents needed, but only 0 available
Insufficient free space: 1 extents needed, but only 0 available
....
Using default stripesize 64.00 KiB.
WARNING: Adding stripes to active and open logical volume stripe_vg/stripe_lv will grow it from 1265 to 2530 extents!
Run "lvresize -l1265 stripe_vg/stripe_lv" to shrink it or use the additional capacity.
Insufficient suitable allocatable extents for logical volume : 10 more required
Reshape request failed on LV stripe_vg/stripe_lv.
