CUPS in RHEL does not recognize changes to /etc/resolv.conf until CUPS restarted

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

If we start CUPS and then then change /etc/resolv.conf by replacing the nameserver line with a new one, CUPS will continue to use the old entry until it is restarted. Running CUPS with the wrong nameservers (depending on the network environment) can cause CUPS to run very slowly as to be unusable.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7.3
  • Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) 1.6.3
