Load balance bond performance is worse after updating to RHEL 6.9 or RHEL 7.3

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Under certain conditions, bond load balancing performance is visibly worse when using RHEL 7.3 or RHEL 7.4 kernels. The same issue is seen in RHEL 6 after updating to RHEL 6.9.
  • A multi-stream iperf3 throughput test shows that even with layer3+4 hash selection, transmit traffic only flows over a single interface.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.3
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.9
  • Bonding modes 2 (balance-xor), 4 (802.3ad) or 5 (balance-tlb)
  • xmit_hash_policy 1 (layer3+4)
