RHEL7: NFS4.1 client with NetApp NFS server encounters READ / NFS4ERR_BAD_STATEID loop with no TEST_STATEID sent

Issue

NFSv4.1 session hangs with NFS4ERR_BAD_STATEID repeating over and over for the same READ. In a tcpdump we don't see any TEST_STATEID operations but see SEQUENCE, OPEN, and READs.

    • seen on kernel-3.10.0-693.el7 (RHEL7.4 GA)
    • seen on kernel-3.10.0-514.16.1.el7
  • NetApp (NFS Server)
    • Seen on Release 9.1.P6
    • Seen on Release 9.0P1
  • NFS4.1
