Cluster failing to start, not fencing, or having other problems with a cluster name over 15 characters in RHEL 5 or 6

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • The nodes were not able to form a cluster.
  • CMAN not allowing the nodes to join the cluster.
  • After rebooting all cluster nodes, cluster formed but clvmd was hanging and would not start.
  • After a node was killed in my cluster, it was not fenced and I see messages referencing the wrong cluster name (the correct name of the cluster plus several characters which appear to be from the name of the fence device):
    ~~~
openais[5860]: [CMAN ] Node 1 conflict, remote cluster name='MY_PRODUCTION_CLUSTERnode3_iLO', local='MY_PRODUCTION_CLUSTER'
Environment
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5 (with the High Availability Add on)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 6 (with the High Availability Add on)
