System fails to boot with error "Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!" after upgrading to kernel-2.6.18-128.1.1.el5

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Mail Server went down due to power outage. Now mount could not find filesystem and boot fails with error :

    Kernel panic - not syncing : Attempted to kill init !
    
  • System boots fine with old kernel-2.6.18-128.el5 but fails to boot with kernel-2.6.18-128.1.1.el5 .

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.1
  • LSI Megaraid 1064e SAS
