Why do I get a "Permission denied" error when enabling debug for the bonding kernel module?

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • I enable debugging for the bonding kernel module by adding debug=1 to the BONDING_OPTS variable in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-bond0 (as documented in /usr/share/doc/kernel-doc-2.6.18/Documentation/networking/bonding.txt and at 42.5.2.1. in the RHEL5 Deployment Guide).

  • After restarting the network, I get a "Permission denied" error message:

# service network restart
  Shutting down interface bond0
  Shutting down loopback
  Bringing up loopback interface: OK
  Bringing up interface bond0: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth: line 126: /sys/class/net/bond0/bonding/debug: Permission denied [ OK ]
