How do I merge an LVM snapshot with its origin in RHEL 6 and 7?

Issue

  • How do I merge an LVM snapshot with its origin, reverting the  contents of that origin back to the state captured in the snapshot?
  • In RHEL 7, when following the resolution in this solution, I receive an error that my root logical volume does not exist and when I try and activate it, I see this error:
Warning: /dev/mapper/rhel-root does not exist
Warning: /dev/rhel/root does not exist

modprobe: FATAL: Module dm_snapshot not found
/usr/sbin/modprobe  failed:1
