Why is my NetworkManager bonding interface not usable?

I configured a bonding interface using nm-connection-editor, but the interface is not usable for NetworkManager.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.4 and later
NetworkManager
bonding to be used with NetworkManager
