Cannot extend a volume group, getting error " volume group 'vg_name' holds max X physical volume(s)"

Issue

  • Extending a volume group (VG) using vgextend throws an error similar to :

    [root@server ~]# vgextend vg_rhel /dev/mapper/mpathb
      No space for '/dev/mapper/mpathb' - volume group 'vg_rhel' holds max 10 physical volume(s).
      Unable to add physical volume '/dev/mapper/mpathb' to volume group 'vg_rhel'.
