Trying to add LUNs to server but /sys/class/fc_transport is empty

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Attempting to present new LUNs to a system without a reboot
  • Following the steps in Red Hat's "Online Storage Reconfiguration Guide"
  • Unable to complete the procedure because /sys/class/fc_transport is not populated with target information:
    $ ll /sys/class/fc_transport/
    total 0
    0 drwxr-xr-x  2 root root 0 Apr  8 16:15 .
    0 drwxr-xr-x 32 root root 0 Apr  8 16:15 ..

  • Because of this storage can only be added by issuing a LIP or rebooting
  • Storage added via these procedures work fine

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3 or higher
  • kernel-2.6.18-128 or higher
  • SAN storage
