Why is kdump mounting the root filesystem when it is not needed?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • The dump target is on a remote system/non-root partition but during the kexec-boot, kdump is mounting the local root filesystem.

  • If the root filesystem if is provisioned through FCoE or is LUKS encrypted (or belongs to any other unsupported dump targets), kdump is trying to mount it and is eventually getting failed to capture a vmcore.
