Why do I get the following error message on my CIFS mount: "mv: cannot move `a' to a subdirectory of itself, `done/a'"?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

When moving a file that is in use on a mounted CIFS filesystem you can get the error "mv: cannot move `a' to a subdirectory of itself, `done/a'" while the file should be moved without errors or the mv command should have an exit code not equal to 0.

This does not appear when using a Linux Samba server sharing a CIFS export or when using a Windows 2008 server.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL4)

  • CIFS mount from a Windows 2003R1 server
