The docker daemon will not start or accept configuration changes after removing upstream version

Issue

  • After removing the upstream version of the docker container runtime (docker-engine packages including docker-engine-$ver-ee and docker-engine-$ver-ce), the Red Hat maintained version of the docker runtime (docker and docker-latest packages) will not start.

  • After removing the upstream version, docker daemon is not accepting configuration changes made to /etc/sysconfig/docker

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Atomic Host
  • Upstream version of docker packages previously installed and have been removed
