RHEL: Connection can be established and starts to work but suddenly stops

Issue

Communication between two hosts with MTU greater than the standard 1500 bytes will fail suddenly stop after the connection completes and after some number of TCP segments are exchanged.

Environment

Red hat Enterprise Linux
MTU of local interface > 1500, advertised MSS > 1460
MTU of remote interface > 1500, advertised MSS > 1460
