When configuring a load balancer for services on a RHEL system, how do I route connections to circumvent the load balancer directly back to the client?

Issue

  • When configuring a series of Red Hat Enterprise Linux Servers to be load balanced for a particular service, such as TFTP, you would like connections to route to the load balancer appliance, such as a Citrix NetBalancer or IBM WebSphere, to one of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Servers available, and then have these servers respond to the request externally without proceeding through the load balancer appliance.
  • An example of this topology is:
    client ------> router/switch -------> load balancer appliance
                |               |
                |               |
                |               |
                |               |---> Red Hat Server 1
                |               |-----------------------> Red Hat Server 2
                |                               |
                |                               |
                |<----------------------------------------------------------|
  • In the above example, a client makes a request, such a TFTP connection, which is handled by the load balancer and proceeds to be forwarded on to the Red Hat Servers based on the load balancing mechanism. When this occurs, it is desired to have the Red Hat servers respond directly to the client, and not issue a connection which must be handled by the load balancer.
