gtk applications treat filenames with a colon as a url

Issue

Under certain conditions, Gnome applications fail to open files that contain a colon (:) in their filename, for example:

[user@host ~] $ eog my:image.png

Will open a window, but will display a message, saying that my:///image.png cannot be opened.
