automount process consumes a large amount of memory.

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • We have a system not really doing much of anything in general, but we noticed that its autofs was growing in memory usage over time.

USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
    root 11744 0.0 75.3 2557772 1441692 ? Ssl Mar20 16:18 automount --pid-file /var/run/autofs.pid

  • When I stopped and started autofs, the memory usage returned to normal (for now).

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
    • autofs package earlier than autofs-5.0.1-0.rc2.186.el5_11.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
    • autofs package earlier than autofs-5.0.5-109.el6.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
    • autofs package earlier than autofs-5.0.7-48.el7.
