On Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Server, cannot mount previously working iSCSI device ('wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock')

Issue

When trying to mount an iSCSI device, the following error occurs:

# mount -t ext3 /dev/sdb /data/aledat
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb,
      missing codepage or other error
      In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
      dmesg | tail  or so
