RHEL 6.1+ supports SHA-2 bootloader passwords, but what about kickstart?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • As of RHEL 6.1, GRUB supports non-md5-hashed passwords, i.e., SHA-256 & SHA-512 (see How do I secure GRUB with a SHA-2 hashed password? for details)
The RHEL6 Installation Guide's Kickstart Options section has an --md5pass option for the bootloader kickstart parameter, but given that this kickstart option explicitly mentions md5: how can a SHA-512-hashed bootloader password be set in kickstart?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
